Community Plant-out 17-18 July 2026 in Grass Flat

Our community planting days will be on a Friday and Saturday at Grass Flat* this year, as part of our "Little Desert Biolinks for Threatened Species" project. We need your help to get native plants in the ground!

One of the species we are planting is the Creeping Boobialla, relied upon by the endangered Golden-rayed Blue Butterfly endemic to the salt lakes of the Wimmera. Help us restore biodiversity and improve habitat connectivity in the Wimmera!

Bring your friends, family, gloves, and get your hands dirty for a great cause. Whether you're a green thumb or just keen to connect with nature, everyone is welcome! Come for both days or one.

Lunch, morning and afternoon tea provided. Please bring your own gloves, water bottle and wear weather-appropriate clothing including sun protection and wet-weather gear.

Passata workshop with Horsham urban Landcare Sun 29 March, 2-4pm

On Saturday 20th September , Horsham Urban Landcare in partnership with Youth Nature Crew are hosting 2 workshops on Veggie Growing and Nestbox Making after our monthly Produce Swap at The Patch Community Garden. It'll be a great day of swapping, learning and conservation in action! Come to one or both workshops and chat with like-minded people over lunch. 10-11am: Produce Swap - bring your excess produce, seedlings, seeds, preserves, baking etc. to swap with others (free, no bookings required, just come along).

11am-1pm: Veggie Growing Workshop - learn how to grow your own organic veggies with Ant Mair from Quamby Farm. Ant will explain techniques and considerations when growing your own veggies, sharing tips and tricks to produce your own tasty organic food, free from harmful chemicals.

1-2pm: Lunch - included when signing up for either workshop. Free with workshop ticket, but please RSVP for catering and dietary numbers.

2-4pm: Nestbox Making Workshop (family-friendly) - assemble nestboxes to create artificial habitat for antechinus and small parrots. Make one nestbox to take home to install in your backyard or on your property (per family) and make one nestbox to donate to property owners affected by the Little Desert bushfire to create habitat for displaced wildlife. Bruce McInnes from Laharum Landcare will be teaching this workshop. This workshop is co-hosted with Youth Nature Crew and is a family-friendly workshop - youth under 18 to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Tickets are FREE for current financial members of Horsham Urban Landcare (HUL) and Youth Nature Crew, or $10 per workshop for non-members.

Nestbox Workshop – Coming to Natimuk! ��

Join us for a hands-on 90-minute workshop where you’ll assemble your own nestbox to support local wildlife. Natimuk Wellness Project and Horsham District Landcare Network are partnering to bring this workshop to Natimuk!

Guided by Bruce, you’ll put together a nestbox designed for gliders or small parrots, or roosting boxes for micro-bats. You’ll leave with a completed nestbox ready to install in your backyard or on your property (or to donate).

Following the January fires, many mature hollow-bearing trees were lost across Natimuk, Grass Flat, and Quantong - removing important breeding habitat for native birds and mammals.

This workshop is family-friendly
(Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)

About the facilitator
Bruce McInnes from Laharum Landcare will guide the session.

What to bring

All tools and materials are provided but if you have a drill or impact driver, please bring it along

Frog Monitoring Program Needing Citizen Scientists Like You!

Horsham District is home to a range of frog species including the vulnerable Growling Grass Frog (pictured). HDLN will host a frog workshop with passionate expert David De Angelis on Saturday 4 October 4-8pm, beginning with an indoor theory session at Horsham Neighbourhood House then a field session.

Frog Identification and Ecology Workshop - a citizen scientist training program

Horsham District Landcare Network is bringing passionate frog expert and environmental educator David De Angelis out to Horsham to teach citizen scientists about frog identification, ecology and monitoring. Volunteer citizen scientists will be trained to conduct frog surveys using a smartphone app. This program will monitor local frog populations, including the vulnerable Growling Grass Frog (pictured) and help inform understanding and biodiversity conservation efforts.

Please read the following information and expectations on participants of this citizen science program before booking a limited spot on the free workshop.

Expectations on participants:

After this workshop, you will conduct 1-2x evenings of frog surveys during the month of October (aka Frogtober). Estimated volunteer commitment: 2-6 hours depending on travel time to frogging sites.

You will work in pairs to conduct surveys (for safety reasons) - you can work with someone you know (who is also attending the workshop) or we will pair you up with another volunteer.

We will allocate frogging sites to each volunteer pair - we have a range of sites around the Horsham district so there is sure to be one near you. If you have a good frogging site on your property or nearby that you would like to be part of the survey program, please let us know. You can indicate site preferences in the checkout questions upon registration for this event.

Participants will need:

Availability and willingness to volunteer 1-2x evenings of frog surveys during the month of October with a buddy (estimated 2-6 hour commitment depending on travel time to frogging sites)

Smart phone or smart device for recording frog surveys using the Frog Census or FrogID app (TBC)

Water bottle

Headtorch for night-time field session

Weather appropriate clothing including closed toe shoes (ideally waterproof boots), wet weather gear and warm clothes for the night-time field session

A roadworthy, registered vehicle between each volunteer pair to access frogging sites - we encourage carpooling *please note travel will be at the cost of volunteers

We will provide:

Classroom and field-based training in this 4-hour workshop and support throughout the program

A "Glovebox Guide to Wimmera Frogs" booklet with CD of frog calls

A light evening meal during the workshop

About David De Angelis and the workshop:

- David is the current president of Frogs Victoria and works as an environmental educator and zoological consultant, having particular interests in the identification, conservation and ecology of frogs. He also maintains involvement in surveying and monitoring for frogs through La Trobe University, Holmesglen Institute and The Field Naturalists Club of Victoria, and has previously done in the greater Wimmera region including the Northern Grampians and Little Desert.

- David will introduce the frogs of Horsham and the surrounding region, including those species most commonly encountered, some that are threatened, and others that have established through introductions. Hear the calls of each species and learn about some of the key features used to identify them, as well as how we can go about recording their calls for Victoria’s Frog Census program run by Melbourne Water in collaboration with other Catchment Management Authorities.

= Afterwards we will make our way to a local wetland in an attempt to hear some of the local frogs and demonstrate recording their calls. We will also cover hygiene procedures to minimise the risk of spreading the Amphibian Chytrid Fungus, and other important considerations to avoid disturbing frog habitats while doing surveys. This workshop is intended to better prepare members of the Landcare Network and other interested members of the local community to monitor frogs in the region, improving our understanding of which species occur in the region and where they are found locally. This has the potential to inform how we can better protect frog habitats.

�� Boneseed Bust! Community Weeding Day in Goroke.

On Sunday 5 October, join Horsham District Landcare Network for a hands-on community day tackling one of our region’s worst environmental weeds – boneseed . This invasive plant threatens biodiversity by smothering native vegetation and reducing habitat for local wildlife. It is considered a Weed of National Significance.

We’ll spend the day working together to remove boneseed via hand pulling, saws and herbicide. Lunch, snacks and tea/coffee will be provided as a thank you to volunteers. No prior experience is necessary, weed ID guidance will be provided.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, connect with community, and make a real difference for the environment. Families and all ages welcome.

Bring:

Clothing appropriate for the outdoors and weather conditions, including closed-toe shoes

Gloves

Water bottle

Hand saw/s or electric pruning saw/s if you have them (we'll have some spare tools)

This event is on private property near the Goroke State Forest. Access via the Goroke State Forest boundary. Parking can be near the end of Kiely St with a short walk to the site.

Laharum Landcare Fair Dinkum Fauna and Nestbox workshop

In August 2025, Laharum Landcare hosted Fair Dinkum Fauna and their many fascinating display animals. People of all ages ranging from 2-70+ year olds learnt about sugar gliders, native mice, reptiles, snakes, frogs, stick insects and got to meet a sample of these cute and curious creatures.

After lunch, attendees headed to a Landcare member's property for a nestbox workshop to create small nest boxes for antechinus and larger boxes for owlet nightjars.

Join Laharum Landcare on Saturday 26th July, for a plantout to increase the number and diversity of native plants along the creekline behind the Laharum football oval.

We're aiming to get about 1800 plants in the ground.

Activities include making tree guards, planting, and guarding the plants.

Lunch provided at Laharum Hall.

Partnerships Against Pests - Autumn Demo Day at Laharum

On Saturday 10th May, HDLN supported Project Platypus and Laharum Landcare to host a "Partnerships Against Pests" Day. Landholders learnt about best practice and latest science in the control of invasive species from expert guest presenters and spent a lovely sunny afternoon in the field being shown rabbit control techniques, deer exclusion fencing and more. It's safe to say every attendee went home with some new knowledge!

On Sun 1st December, 2024, Horsham District Landcare Network hosted a "Brolga Walk and Talk" at Taylors Lake with Dr. Inka Veltheim. Inka studied her PhD on the Brolga population of south-west Victoria and shared her extensive knowledge on these fascinating birds and their ecology. Attendees were lucky enough to see 4 Brolgas and a pair of White-bellied Sea-eagles and their juvenile! We also heard from local Keith Fischer who has been observing the Brolga at Taylors Lake for over a decade. A great day out and a wonderful combination of scientific and local knowledge.

Horsham Urban Landcare are excited to bring Ammie Jackson to Horsham for a full day of garden-related workshops! We'll be offering an edible weed workshop, sauerkraut making and sourdough making. Come along for a half day or a full day. Workshops will be held at The Patch Community Garden and the Salvation Army Hall. Discount available for Landcare members.

A bit about Ammie:

Ammie has a life-long love of plants and has been teaching edible weeds workshops for over 10 years. She has a passion for encouraging biodiversity into all of our systems, even our gut-flora, so it was a natural progression to get into fermenting foods. Workshops on probiotics, with demonstrations on how to make sourdough, sauerkraut and kombucha have been hugely popular in the last few years.

Ammie has studied conservation and land management, and permaculture, and has worked in the NRM industry since 2005. She is currently a Landcare Facilitator based in the Macedon Ranges.

Macrophotography and bioblitz workshop

Sunday 15th september at Horsham neighbourhood house

Horsham District Landare Network is bringing a FREE phone photography workshop to Horsham with a focus on macrophotography. We will show you how to take better photos of plants and insects to be able to help you identify what you're seeing! We'll also introduce participants to iNaturalist and the Great Southern BioBlitz.

Participants will meet at the Neighbourhood House for an introduction then head over to the Police Paddock to practice. Afternoon tea is supplied.
